Family Acanthamoebidae Sawyer and Griffin 1975 renewed def. Tice et al. 2016

Diagnosis: Flattened to dome shaped amoebae with flabellate-type pseudopodia some with furcate subpseudopodia. Where examined a interphase cells with a cytoplasmic microtubular organizing center (MTOC) from laminate structure to a simple globular mass with many raditating microtubules.

Type species: Acanthamoeba castellanii (Douglas, 1930).
