Genus Actinosphaeridium Zacharias, 1893
Actinosphaeridium pedatus Zacharias, 1893
Syn.: Nucearia caulescens Penard, 1903
Diagnosis: cell surrounded by a mucous layer with space between the layer and the cell body. Filopodia with granules, sometimes branching. Where the filopodia go through the mucous layer, the layer is lifted a bit like a tent by its pole. Cell stalked; stalk ends at the mucous layer, not at the cell body. During cyst formation the cyst is covered with siliceous plates.
Ecology: I found two specimens in a sample from a peatbog in Austria, collected by Angie Opitz in 2015.
Remarks: The mucuos layer is very hard to detect. It’s possible that Zacharias and Penard have considered the inner wall of the layer as the outer wall.
Taxonomic status is unclear.
