Cochliopodium maeoticum Kudryavtsev, 2006

Diagnosis: Length in locomotion, 12-22 µm (average 17 µm), breadth, 18-32 µm (average 22 µm), length : breadth ratio, 0.54-0.91 (average 0.75). Oval or fan-shaped, with uneven frontal and lateral margins of the hyaloplasm, sometimes with few subpseudopodia. Trailing filaments often present at the posterior margin. Spherical vesicular nucleus, 2-4 µm in diameter (average 3.5 µm), with central nucleolus, 1.5-3 µm in diameter (average 2 µm). Scales consist of a disc-like base plate, 0.8-0.9 µm in diameter, made up by fine rings, a central column of 5 stalks and a complex apical part consisting of 5 spokes which form a basket-like structure and a fine networked disc 0.6-0.7 µm in diameter. From the base of the apical part a tubular cross-striated spine about 50 nm in thickness and 1.5 µm in length arises; each spoke is connected to the spine with a fine filament. Height of the scale 0.5-0.6 µm.

Observed habitat: Gulf of Taganrog (the Azov Sea, southern Russia), bottom sediments, salinity about 2.5%.

Remarks: Differs from species with structurally similar scales, C. spiniferum, C. kieliense, and Cochliopodium sp. 3 (Bark 1973), in the proportions of a scale, the structure of the apical part and the base plate. Locomotive form similar to that of C. minutoidum, but differs from this species in scale structure (5-, not 4-rayed symmetry of the scale, different structure of base plate and apical part, presence of a spine).
