Cryptodifflugia spec. 16 µm, aperture 4.5 µm

This small ovoid, almost spherical, Cryptodifflugia species was present in a sample brought from Cuba by a tourist (2018). The sample was a piece of moss on a tree about 1 km from the cabin where Fidel Castro had his command post in 1958. The moss was rinsed with demineralized water. The water was kept in a glass with sediment on the bottom. I made some wet mounts of the sediment. This species multiplied easily both in the sediment and the wet mounts. The nucleus was remarkable because of a second smaller kind of nucleolus or something else, between the larger central nucleolus and the nucleolar membrane. The specimens also carried a lot of debris around the aperture.
Measurements: Shell Length 16.0-18.1 µm, Breadth 14.5-15.6 µm, L/B 1.1-1.2; aperture 3.8-4.5 µm; nucleus 6.0-6.4 µm, central nucleolus 3.2-3.4 µm, eccentric ‘nucleolus’ 09.-1.6 µm (n=4).

Cryptodifflugia spec. – notice the small nucleolus attached to the central one, and the debris around the aperture.
Cryptodifflugia spec., showing two optical levels of the nucleus. The left image shows the irregular ‘satellite’ (s) and the right hand side image shows the central nucleolus (nc). r = hollow? rim of the aperture
Cryptodifflugia spec. – notice the typical structure of the nucleus.
Cryptodifflugia spec. – locomotive form
