Gromia from Schiermonnikoog
"Gromia" from Schiermonnikoog

cf Gromia spec.

Diagnosis: Amoeboid with membranous theca, covered with some agglutinated material; cells ovoid or pyriform, smaller cells oblong. Cytoplasm vacuolated, with large vacuoles, pressed against each other. Many food particles present. One relatively small nucleus with a broad peripheral band of nucleoli. Pseudostome trumpet- or funnel-shaped. Filopodia with rapid bidirectional streaming of small granules, anastomizing but without building a reticulum as known from foraminifera.

Dimensions: cell 120-238 µm (n=4); nucleus

Ecology: Only known from brackish water on the Dutch island Schiermonnikoog. Observed food: diatoms and algae.

Remarks: The taxonomic position of this species is not clear. The structure of the granulopodia resembles that of Arachnula and Leptogromia.
