Hyalosphenia cuneata Stein, 1857

Diagnosis: Shell exceedingly transparent, without any pores; shell shorter and broader than H. elegans, greatly compressed, with an indication of a broad rounded keel, colorless; without zoochlorellae; nucleus with some spherical nucleolar fragments.

Dimensions: Length in literature 60-75 µm; my measurements 52-67 µm. I found two specimens in one sample that measured 56.6 and 67.3 µm respectively.

Ecology: Freshwater; clear stagnant water and also among Sphagnum. I found this species in different water types, e.g. peat bogs, an isolated pond in a meadow, the sandy shore of a deep lake (Spiegelplas) and a mesotrophic pond (Crailoo).

Remarks: This species multiplied well in wet preparations kept in moist chambers .
