Class Labyrinthulomycetes Dick, 2001

Diagnosis: Producing a rhizoid-like ectoplasmic network of branched, anastomosing, wall-less filaments produced by a specialized organelle known as the bothrosome; multilamellate cell walls composed of Golgi body-derived scales; biciliate zoospores possessing an anterior flagellum.

Labyrinthulomycetes are mainly known as marine organisms, though I find them in almost every freshwater sample.

This class includes:

  1. Order Thraustochytrida Sparrow1973
  2. Order Labyrinthulida Doflein 1901
  3. Order Amphitremida Poche1913
