Leptophrys elegans Hertwig & Lesser, 1874

Diagnosis: Trophozoites usually ribbon-shaped, with continuously moving granular colorless cytoplasm; filopodia usually produced at the edges of the cell, often originating from a hyaline and very delicate fringe of cytoplasm, sometimes in tufts; filopodia long and thin, mostly unbranched, without membranosomes; cytoplasm with several contractile vacuoles; colorless granules; nuclei not visible; cells constantly moving and changing of shape.

Dimensions: My measurements: stretched body 160-300 µm.

Ecology: Fresh water, France

Remarks: The photomicrographs on this page are from specimens which showed up in moist chamber slides from samples from a fast running stream near St. Tropez, France and a peat bog along the Bert Bospad, the Netherlands.
