Microworld

world of amoeboid organisms

The next photomicrographs show the locomotion of a specimen of Leptophrys during some minutes. The amoeba moved as a compact cell with long and short filopodia over the slide when it came in my field of view, and in the strong light of the microscope. It started to flatten its body, by anchoring it to the substrate and stretched itself to a kind of plasmodium, but soon after it stopped and started moving again.

Leptophrys vorax
00.00 Min.: The isodiametric morphotype: a compact cell with more or less equally distributed, slender, filose pseudopodia sometimes emerging in tufts.
Leptophrys vorax
01.50 Min.: The cell anchors at the left and starts stretching to the right.
Leptophrys vorax
02.10 Min.: More hyaloplasm anchors to the substrate; more filopodia are stretched out.
Leptophrys vorax
02.35 Min.
Leptophrys vorax
03.30 Min.: The cell stops further stretching.
Leptophrys vorax
04.50 Min.: The cell starts moving again.
