Lithocolla globosa with its typical reddish color

Lithocolla globosa  Schulze, 1874

Diagnosis: amoeba surrounded by a layer of small irregular mineral grains; test flexible; with very fine smooth filopodia, without the granules so typical for true heliozoans; plasmabody usually with a reddish color. Nucleus vesicular with central nucleolus.

Dimensions:

Ecology: I have sampled ample specimens in a small shallow pond in a salt marsh on the Waddensea Island Schiermonnikoog and an other population in a small river in Neer, Limburg, the Netherlands. I don’t know if these two populations are the same species.
This species is known from freshwater, brackish and marine water.

Remarks: this amoeba can move fast, but doesn’t have a rolling movement like true heliozoans.
The taxonomic status of this species is uncertain. It is probably close related to nucleariid filose amoebae.
