Diagnosis: periplast typically containing tangential siliceous plates surrounded by a hollow marginal rim but never goblet-shaped or other radial scales.

Type genus Raphidiophrys Archer,1867

Included genera:

Raphidiophrys (six freshwater spp.).
Polyplacocystis (six spp.; marine, freshwater or both),
Heteroraphidiophrys (one marine species).
Pseudoraphidiophrys (four freshwater spp.) lacking the hollow rim.
